Fight at Kelvin High Leaves One Dead
A young man is dead and another is in police custody after a stabbing outside Kelvin High School in River Heights.
Justice sources tell 680 CJOB the fatal stabbing at Kelvin High School Tuesday was a spat between two teenage boys over the affection of a girl.
Brett Bourne, a former Grade 12 student at Kelvin is the victim. Grief counsellors will be available to students and staff today.
Emergency crews were called to the school at around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses say students and teachers were already helping the young man before paramedics arrived.
“I did see the victim sitting up against the fence and our principal helping make sure the situation was calm,” said grade 11 student Evan Friesen. “He looked to be in shock, teachers were doing everything they could, students with lifesaving training were offering to help.”
The school was immediately placed into lockdown as a massive police presence rushed to the school including the tactical unit.
Paramedics took the victim to hospital with serious injuries. However, Winnipeg School Division’s Mark Wasyliw confirmed to 680 CJOB that the young man died of his wounds. He says grief councillors were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“There would have been a lot of students out in the yard at that time. We suspect many of them witnessed what had happened and this would obviously be very traumatic for them.”
Friends are now commenting on Bourne’s Facebook page, leaving memories and well wishes for the family. Flowers have been dropped off in front of the high school as well.
Winnipeg Police have remained tight-lipped on the investigation, but, confirm one young man is in police custody. No charges have been laid. Several students are also been questioned. We are expecting an update from investigators in the next couple of days. Statement From Winnipeg School Division
